Pip vs ChatGPT for Teens: Which Is Better for Your Child?

Compare Pip and ChatGPT for Teens on age fit, parental visibility, homework help, privacy, quiet hours, and cost, so families can choose the right AI.

Pip Editorial Team10 min read

Pip is a parent-managed AI chat for children ages 3 to 17. ChatGPT for Teens is OpenAI's protected experience for ages 13 to 17.

The practical difference is parent visibility. Pip lets parents review conversations and set per-child rules from the start. ChatGPT for Teens lets linked parents manage selected settings and quiet hours, but they cannot read chats.

What is ChatGPT for Teens?

OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens on August 18, 2026 for eligible users aged 13 to 17, on Free and paid personal plans. Linked parents can manage selected settings, including quiet hours (which block access) and Study Mode. Study hours do not block ChatGPT.

What parents cannot see: conversation history, individual chats, transcripts, or real-time activity. Limited serious-safety notifications do not include the underlying conversation. Either party can unlink.

OpenAI currently lists "Improve the model for everyone" as on by default for linked teen accounts. ChatGPT is not intended for independent use under 13. For age rules, teen safeguards, and what to set up after linking, see Is ChatGPT Safe for Kids?.

School offerings such as ChatGPT for Education are institution-managed. They are not the same as a parent linking a home teen account.

What is Pip?

Pip is a child-focused AI chat managed through a parent account. The parent (18+) signs up with email, Apple, or Google, then adds a profile for each child (name and birth date). Kids join with a short six-character code or shared-tablet pairing. Kids never need an email or password.

Pip is built for children ages 3 to 17.

Parents can:

  • Choose which helpers are available (Homework Helper, Story Time, Curious Mind, Calm Corner, plus open chat the parent can enable)
  • Toggle topic permissions
  • Set daily message limits and quiet hours
  • Review every conversation
  • Review safety-related Issues separately from ordinary chat
  • Optionally receive alerts that never include the child's words

Some sensitive categories stay blocked and cannot be turned off. Other topics are yours to shape. How those checks run, including fail-closed behavior when a review cannot finish, is explained in Inside Pip: How We Built an AI Safety Pipeline for Kids.

Pip's terms state clearly that AI can be wrong, moderation can miss things, Pip is not therapy or an emergency service, and parent controls do not replace parental supervision.

The core difference: parent controls vs parent visibility

Parent controls decide what the child may do: topics, features, quiet hours, usage limits.

Parent visibility decides what the adult can review afterward: chat history, Issues, activity.

These are easy to mix up. A product can have strong controls and still hide every transcript from the parent.

ChatGPT for Teens is built around teen privacy. Linked parents get meaningful settings and limited serious-safety notifications. They do not get conversation review.

Pip is built around family visibility. Parents can read chats, see refusals and extra-care replies in Issues, and keep one set of rules per child.

Neither model is automatically more responsible. A 17-year-old researching college essays may reasonably expect privacy from parents. An 11-year-old first using generative AI often needs the opposite: an adult who can see what happened and talk about it. Tell children up front what parents can see. Hidden surveillance is a poor substitute for a family agreement.

Age-by-age notes

The situation table above is the short version. Match it to the child's maturity, not only their birthday.

Under 13

OpenAI does not intend ChatGPT for independent use at this age. Pip is the product in this comparison built around parent-managed child profiles. Adult-led ChatGPT at the kitchen table is still an option. A fake-age account is not. Details: Is ChatGPT Safe for Kids?.

Ages 13-15

Both can work. Choose Pip when you want to read chats and keep several siblings on one plan. Choose ChatGPT for Teens when the teen wants OpenAI's general assistant and you accept no transcript access. Link parental controls either way.

Ages 16-17

ChatGPT for Teens is often a reasonable default for independent research. Pip still fits if younger siblings already share the family subscription, or if the teen prefers a parent-aware environment.

Homework and learning

Pip's Homework Helper is built to explain and quiz rather than hand over finished assignments. Pair it with family rules such as "hints first, then I try." Prompts and a family homework agreement: AI for Homework: How Kids Can Learn Without Cheating.

ChatGPT's Study Mode, study hours, and homework reminders can also support learning. Study hours do not block ChatGPT; they are a schedule cue, not a lock. Quiet hours are the setting that blocks access. Without parent transcript review, you rely more on trust, school policy, and the teen's own habits.

A specialized tutor such as Khanmigo can still be the better pick when formal academic tutoring is the only goal. Neither tool replaces a teacher. Both can be wrong.

Privacy and data in plain language

Pip stores conversations so parents can review them across sessions. Visibility requires retention until you delete. Pip's Privacy Policy (updated September 13, 2026) states that chat content is not used to train AI models, kids do not create independent accounts, there is no advertising to children, and Sumlane UG in Germany is the controller.

ChatGPT for Teens keeps conversations private from linked parents. If you do not want chats used to improve models, turn off "Improve the model for everyone" (currently on by default for linked teen accounts). Turning it off does not delete chat history. Live wording: OpenAI's Data Controls FAQ.

Privacy law is not a certificate that every AI answer will be accurate or child-appropriate.

Pricing snapshot

  • Pip: 3-day free trial, then $9.99/month on the US App Store for the whole family (unlimited children and devices). iOS and Android prices can differ; you'll see the exact amount in your store before you subscribe.
  • ChatGPT: Free personal tier plus paid personal plans. Plus is commonly about $20/month as of this research date; confirm live on ChatGPT pricing. ChatGPT for Teens applies to Free and paid personal plans, not to a separate child SKU.

Compare household cost if you have several children. One Pip family subscription is a different shape from several ChatGPT accounts, some of them Plus. Do not assume a school's ChatGPT setup gives a parent home controls or transcript access.

A short checklist before you choose

If you choose Pip

  • Create the parent account first; add each child with a real birth date.
  • Turn on only the helpers your child actually needs.
  • Set topic permissions, daily limits, and quiet hours per child.
  • Tell your child that you can read conversations, and why.
  • Review Issues as well as ordinary chats.
  • Agree that AI can be wrong and that serious problems go to a real person.

If you choose ChatGPT for Teens

  • Confirm your child is 13 or older (or meets any higher minimum in your country) and has permission.
  • Link parental controls; do not skip the remaining toggles.
  • Review "Improve the model for everyone" and memory settings.
  • Turn on quiet hours if you want access blocked at bedtime.
  • Do not expect to read chats or get real-time monitoring.
  • Write family rules for homework, private information, and when to stop and talk to you.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pip better than ChatGPT for kids?

Use the situation table at the top. The deciding question is usually parent visibility, not which model is larger.

Can parents read ChatGPT for Teens conversations?

No. Linked parents cannot access conversation history, individual chats, transcripts, or real-time activity. They may receive limited notifications in certain serious safety situations, without the underlying conversation.

Can kids under 13 use ChatGPT?

OpenAI says ChatGPT is not intended for children under 13. Adults may conduct educational interactions. Do not create a fake-age account. Full age guidance: Is ChatGPT Safe for Kids?.

Does ChatGPT for Teens work on the free plan?

OpenAI says the teen experience is available on Free and paid personal plans. Limits on models and tools still depend on the plan.

Do quiet hours work the same way in both products?

Both can block access during hours a parent sets. In ChatGPT, quiet hours block access; study hours do not. Pip quiet hours are enforced in the app alongside daily message limits.

Does Pip work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Pip is an app for iOS and Android. Download it from the App Store or Google Play. Parents sign up first; kids join with a short code.

Is any AI chatbot completely safe for children?

No. Safety systems reduce risk but cannot guarantee every answer is correct or appropriate. Parents remain part of the system.

Try Pip

The table at the top is the comparison. If Pip is the better fit for your family, the next step is a parent account.
