Among teens using AI for school, 39% said they had missed out on learning because AI completed an assignment. At the same time, 66% said AI had helped them understand their schoolwork.

Both can be true.

AI can explain something in the exact way a child needs. It can also remove the thinking that the assignment was designed to develop. Sometimes the difference comes down to a single prompt.

The Joint Council for Qualifications warns that students must submit work that is demonstrably their own. Its guidance identifies copying or paraphrasing AI-generated content, using AI to complete parts of an assessment, and failing to acknowledge permitted AI use as possible forms of misuse.

The International Baccalaureate does not simply ban AI. It expects students to remain active participants in their work and to credit AI-generated material when it is used.

These are examples rather than universal rules. Policies vary by school, country, subject, teacher, and assignment.

AI can improve homework performance without improving learning

A completed worksheet is visible. Learning is harder to see.

The OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026 draws an important distinction between completing a task with generative AI and actually learning from the task.
